About PAN-OS MCP Server
PAN-OS MCP Server lets firewall administrators manage and configure Palo Alto Networks devices through the XML API, using Claude or other compatible tools. It covers system queries, operational commands, configuration changes, and Panorama policy pushes.
Key features
- 01API-key authentication
- 02Retrieve system information
- 03Run operational commands
- 04Commit configurations
- 05Set, edit, delete, and rename configuration
- 06Push policies from Panorama
Use cases
- 01Check firewall system information
- 02Run PAN-OS operational commands
- 03Commit candidate configurations
- 04Push Panorama policies to managed devices
MCP support
The MCP server exposes PAN-OS and Panorama XML API capabilities to MCP clients, including system information, operational commands, and configuration management tools.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEPAN-OS MCP Server
This project provides a Model Control Protocol (MCP) server for interacting with Palo Alto Networks firewalls using the XML API. It allows you to use Claude or other compatible tools to manage and configure your PAN-OS devices through natural language.
Features
- Authenticate with a PAN-OS/Panorama device using API key
- Retrieve system information
- Execute operational commands
- Commit configurations
- Perform configuration actions (set, edit, delete, rename, etc.)
- Push policy from Panorama to managed devices
Requirements
- Python 3.13+
- Palo Alto Networks firewall
- API access to your PAN-OS device
Installation
-
Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/edoscars/pan-os-mcp.git -
Install the dependencies:
pip install -r requirements.txt -
Add to your Claude Desktop configuration (add the correct path in the args):
{ "mcpServers": { "pan-os":{ "command": "uv", "args":[ "--directory", "C:\\Users\\USER\\pan-os", "run", "pan-os.py" ] } } } -
Edit the
pan-os.pyfile to configure your PAN-OS device:
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Pan-OS / Panorama Configuration (adjust to your environment)
# -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
PA_HOST = "your-firewall-ip"
PA_API_KEY = "your-api-key"
Available Commands
The server provides several tools for interacting with PAN-OS:
get_system_info: Retrieve basic system informationop_command: Execute operational commands using XMLcommit_config: Commit candidate configurationscommit_all_shared_policy: Push policy from Panorama to managed devicesconfig_action: Perform configuration actions using XPath
Security Considerations
- This project is designed for demonstration and usage in controlled environments.
- The API key in the code should be kept secure and not committed to public repositories.
- For production use, ensure proper authentication controls and consider adding TLS verification.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
