About smails

smails is a disposable email service for humans and AI agents, usable from the command line or as an MCP server. It suits workflows that need to receive verification codes, and mailboxes can be created without signup.

Key features

  1. 01Create and manage disposable mailboxes from the CLI
  2. 02List, read and delete messages
  3. 03Agents can create mailboxes on their own
  4. 04No signup required

Use cases

  1. 01Letting an AI agent receive sign-up verification codes
  2. 02Receiving test emails from a terminal
  3. 03Reading verification emails from an MCP client

MCP support

This project is an MCP server that provides five tools to MCP clients such as Claude Desktop and Cursor for creating mailboxes, listing, reading and deleting messages, and getting the address.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"pexni-smails": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@smails/cli"
]
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @smails/cli

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Packages
npm@smails/cli0.0.12

Details

From the project README

@smails/cli

npm

Disposable email for humans and AI agents. A throwaway inbox you can drive from the terminal — or plug into any AI agent as an MCP server, so it can receive verification codes and emails on its own. No signup.

→ smails.dev

CLI

npx @smails/cli create # create a mailbox (token saved to ~/.smails)
npx @smails/cli inbox # list messages
npx @smails/cli read <id> # read a message (full id or short prefix)
npx @smails/cli delete <id>   # delete a message
npx @smails/cli whoami # show the current address
npx @smails/cli create --force # replace with a fresh mailbox

Install globally for a shorter command:

npm i -g @smails/cli
smails create

MCP server (for AI agents)

Add the server to any MCP client (e.g. Claude Desktop — ~/.claude/mcp.json, Cursor, etc.):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "smails": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@smails/cli", "mcp"]
    }
  }
}

The agent can then create a mailbox and read incoming mail itself. Tools:

ToolDescription
create_mailboxCreate a throwaway mailbox
list_messagesList messages in the current mailbox
read_messageRead a message by id
delete_messageDelete a message by id
get_addressGet the current mailbox address

Config

  • The current mailbox (address + token) is stored in ~/.smails.
  • SMAILS_API_URL overrides the API base URL (default https://smails.dev).

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
