About Pharo MCP Server
Pharo MCP Server is a discontinued placeholder project with no working code released. Its README points to an existing Pharo MCP implementation and describes a shift toward smalltalk-live-cli.
Key features
- 01Discontinued development
- 02No working code released
- 03Points to an existing Pharo MCP implementation
- 04Future direction is smalltalk-live-cli
Use cases
- 01Check the project's development status
- 02Find the Pharo MCP implementation cited in the README
MCP support
The project planned a Pharo MCP server but never progressed beyond an initial stub or released working code. The README says an MCP adapter could potentially be added to smalltalk-live-cli later.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Warning
This project has been abandoned and will not be developed further.
This repository was only ever a placeholder. No working code was published here – the plan for a Pharo implementation of Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP) never got past an initial stub.
Why
In the meantime, an MCP server implementation for Pharo already exists – pharo-smalltalk-interop-mcp-server by Masashi Umezawa – so there is no point in building a second one here. If you are looking for MCP access to Pharo, use that one.
What's next
Instead of an MCP server, I'm now taking a different approach: a command-line interface (CLI) for live development and debugging in a running Pharo image.
👉 smalltalk-live-cli (stlive) – inspect, debug, fix and re-run in a running image.
A shell is the one integration point every coding agent already has, and the protocol behind the CLI stays transport-agnostic, so an MCP adapter could still be added on top later if needed.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
