About Banking Regulations
Banking Regulations is an MCP server for retrieving and searching US banking and consumer-finance rules in 12 CFR. It is intended for users researching regulatory text and compliance requirements, with lookup by citation or regulation name.
Key features
- 01Retrieve regulation text by citation
- 02Resolve regulation letters to sections
- 03Search rules by keyword
- 04Return citations, excerpts, and source URLs
- 05Local stdio server option
Use cases
- 01Look up the text of a cited rule
- 02Find regulations covering a compliance topic
- 03Identify rules by regulation letter
MCP support
Exposes tools for retrieving and searching 12 CFR banking regulations to MCP clients. It can connect through Pipeworx or run locally over stdio without gateway meta-tools.
Configuration
Remote servers need no local install. Pick your client, then copy the config or install in one click.

Servers that need sign-in will prompt on first connect.
Tools
43| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| q | string | No | Alias for question. |
| ask | string | No | Alias for question. |
| text | string | No | Alias for question. |
| input | string | No | Alias for question. |
| packs | array | No | OPTIONAL. Restrict routing to these pack slugs (e.g. ["sec-form-d","sec-13f"]) — the router then picks only from tools in those packs. Omit for the default full-catalog routing. Slugs come from list_packs / search_packs / https://pipeworx.io/directory; unlisted or unknown slugs are ignored and named in _meta.pack_scope.ignored, and if none of them resolves the question is routed across the whole catalog with _meta.pack_scope.full_catalog:true (never an empty answer). |
| query | string | No | Alias for question. |
| prompt | string | No | Alias for question. |
| message | string | No | Alias for question. |
| question | string | Yes | Your question or request in natural language. Accepts query, q, prompt, text, input, ask, message as aliases. |

| Tool | Description |
|---|---|
banking_regulation | Get the full text of one banking regulation — a US Federal Reserve, OCC, FDIC, CFPB or NCUA rule codified in 12 CFR — by its citation or Regulation letter. Returns the exact regulatory wording currently in force. Answers "what does Regulation E require", "what is the Federal Reserve regulation for X", "read 12 CFR 1026.19", "the CFPB rule on X", "the OCC / FDIC regulation for X", "bank capital requirement". Forgiving input: "1026.19", "12 CFR 1026.19", "§ 217.10", "1026.19(e)" (paragraph stripped to the section), "part 1026". Fed "Regulation letters" resolve automatically: "Regulation Z" (truth in lending) -> part 1026, "Reg B" (ECOA) -> 1002, "Reg C" (HMDA) -> 1003, "Reg D" -> 204, "Reg E" (EFTA) -> 1005, "Reg O" (insider lending) -> 215, "Reg W" (affiliate transactions) -> 223, "Reg X" (RESPA) -> 1024, "Reg Y" (bank holding companies) -> 225, "Reg CC" (funds availability) -> 229, "Reg DD" (truth in savings) -> 1030, "Reg Q" / capital -> 217, plus "Volcker rule" -> 248, "CRA" -> 228, "liquidity coverage ratio" -> 249. Covers bank compliance across all of Title 12: consumer financial protection, mortgage disclosure and servicing, deposits and payments, capital and liquidity, holding-company supervision, safety and soundness. Pass a whole part or Regulation letter to get that part's section list. Example: banking_regulation({ citation: "1026.19" }) -> certain mortgage and variable-rate transactions; banking_regulation({ citation: "Regulation Z" }) -> the truth-in-lending part's section list. Keyless. |
banking_regulations_search | Keyword search across the US banking regulations — Federal Reserve, OCC, FDIC, CFPB and NCUA rules in 12 CFR. Answers "what banking regulations cover X", "the Federal Reserve regulation about X", "find the CFPB rule for X", "which consumer financial protection rule applies to X", "the bank compliance requirement for X". Great for topics: truth in lending disclosure, mortgage origination and servicing, closing disclosures and TRID, ability to repay and qualified mortgages, electronic fund transfers and error resolution, overdraft and remittances, fair lending and adverse action notices, HMDA reporting, funds availability and check holds, deposit insurance, risk-based capital and leverage ratios, liquidity coverage, transactions with affiliates, insider lending limits, bank holding company activities, stress testing, community reinvestment. Returns matching banking rules with citation (12 CFR), heading, excerpt, and source URL. Example: banking_regulations_search({ query: "truth in lending disclosure" }); banking_regulations_search({ query: "ability to repay qualified mortgage", limit: 15 }). Keyless. |
Quick Start
Add to your MCP client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.):
{
"mcpServers": {
"banking-regulations": {
"url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/banking-regulations/mcp"
}
}
}
What this endpoint actually serves
tools/list at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/banking-regulations/mcp returns the tools in the table
above plus the shared Pipeworx meta-tools — ask_pipeworx,
discover_tools, search_within, remember/recall and the rest of the
gateway-wide set. So the tool count you see is larger than this table: a
single-pack endpoint currently lists roughly 30 shared tools alongside the
pack's own. The connection's initialize response states its exact scope, and
is the authoritative answer for a given day.
This is deliberate, not multiplexing by accident. The meta-tools are what let a
scoped connection answer a question this pack does not cover — via
ask_pipeworx, which routes across the whole catalog — without you adding a
second MCP server. There is currently no way to mount a pack endpoint without
them; if the extra schemas cost you more context than the routing is worth,
connect to the full gateway once rather than to several pack endpoints.
Or connect to the full Pipeworx gateway to get every pack's tools listed directly, instead of just this one's:
{
"mcpServers": {
"pipeworx": {
"url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp"
}
}
}
Both URLs reach the same gateway and the same 1679+ data sources. The
only difference is which pack's tools are listed directly; ask_pipeworx
reaches all of them from either one.
No MCP client? Call it over HTTP
curl -X POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/banking_regulation \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"citation":"Regulation Z"}'
No account needed for the first calls. Inspect any tool: GET https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/banking_regulation. Find one: POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/search_packs with {"query":"..."}.
Standalone (no gateway account)
This package also runs as a local stdio MCP server — no Pipeworx account, no gateway round-trip:
{
"mcpServers": {
"banking-regulations": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-banking-regulations"]
}
}
}
Or run it directly to confirm it starts:
npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-banking-regulations
It speaks MCP over stdin/stdout and answers initialize/tools/list/tools/call
for only this pack's tools — none of the shared meta-tools the gateway
connection above adds. Same source, same tools, no ask_pipeworx routing.
Using with ask_pipeworx
Instead of calling tools directly, you can ask questions in plain English — this works on the pack endpoint above as well as on the full gateway:
ask_pipeworx({ question: "your question about Banking Regulations data" })
The gateway picks the right tool and fills the arguments automatically.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
