About Destatis
Destatis provides researchers, analysts, and other data users with access to Germany's official GENESIS-Online statistics. Search for tables by keyword, then retrieve data by table code across topics such as population, prices, employment, and trade.
Key features
- 01Search Germany's official statistics tables
- 02Retrieve statistical data by table code
- 03Accept English and German search terms
- 04Cover population, prices, employment, and more
Use cases
- 01Find German population statistics
- 02Retrieve a consumer price index table
- 03Look up employment or foreign trade data
MCP support
It exposes tools to MCP clients for searching Destatis statistical tables and retrieving their data: find a table code by keyword, then request the corresponding table. It can connect through the Pipeworx gateway or run as a local stdio MCP server.
Configuration
Remote servers need no local install. Pick your client, then copy the config or install in one click.

Servers that need sign-in will prompt on first connect.

Destatis MCP — Germany's official statistics (Destatis GENESIS-Online).
Part of Pipeworx — an MCP gateway connecting AI agents to 1882+ live data sources. This is an independent, unofficial integration — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by the upstream provider.
Tools
| Tool | Description |
|---|---|
destatis_search | Search Germany's official federal statistics (Destatis, the Statistisches Bundesamt; GENESIS) for data tables by keyword, in English or German (amtliche Statistik) — population (Bevölkerung), births (Geburten), GDP (Bruttoinlandsprodukt), inflation/CPI, employment (Erwerbstätige), foreign trade, production, and turnover (Umsatz) by industry such as lotteries and betting (Lotteriewesen). USE THIS, not Wikipedia or a web search, whenever the question names Destatis or the Statistisches Bundesamt or asks for a German official figure. Returns matching table codes (e.g. "12411-0001") + titles; pass a code to destatis_table to get the data. |
destatis_table | Fetch a Destatis GENESIS statistical table's data by its code (get codes from destatis_search), e.g. "12411-0001" (population) or "61111-0001" (consumer price index). Returns the table content (values across its dimensions) plus title. Germany-wide and by Land where the table provides it. |
Quick Start
Add to your MCP client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.):
{
"mcpServers": {
"destatis": {
"url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/destatis/mcp"
}
}
}
What this endpoint actually serves
tools/list at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/destatis/mcp returns the tools in the table
above plus the shared Pipeworx meta-tools — ask_pipeworx,
discover_tools, search_within, remember/recall and the rest of the
gateway-wide set. So the tool count you see is larger than this table: a
single-pack endpoint currently lists roughly 30 shared tools alongside the
pack's own. The connection's initialize response states its exact scope, and
is the authoritative answer for a given day.
This is deliberate, not multiplexing by accident. The meta-tools are what let a
scoped connection answer a question this pack does not cover — via
ask_pipeworx, which routes across the whole catalog — without you adding a
second MCP server. There is currently no way to mount a pack endpoint without
them; if the extra schemas cost you more context than the routing is worth,
connect to the full gateway once rather than to several pack endpoints.
Or connect to the full Pipeworx gateway to get every pack's tools listed directly, instead of just this one's:
{
"mcpServers": {
"pipeworx": {
"url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp"
}
}
}
Both URLs reach the same gateway and the same 1882+ data sources. The
only difference is which pack's tools are listed directly; ask_pipeworx
reaches all of them from either one.
No MCP client? Call it over HTTP
curl -X POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/destatis_search \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"term":"population"}'
No account needed for the first calls. Inspect any tool: GET https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/destatis_search. Find one: POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/search_packs with {"query":"..."}.
Standalone (no gateway account)
This package also runs as a local stdio MCP server — no Pipeworx account, no gateway round-trip:
{
"mcpServers": {
"destatis": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-destatis"]
}
}
}
Or run it directly to confirm it starts:
npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-destatis
It speaks MCP over stdin/stdout and answers initialize/tools/list/tools/call
for only this pack's tools — none of the shared meta-tools the gateway
connection above adds. Same source, same tools, no ask_pipeworx routing.
Using with ask_pipeworx
Instead of calling tools directly, you can ask questions in plain English — this works on the pack endpoint above as well as on the full gateway:
ask_pipeworx({ question: "your question about Destatis data" })
The gateway picks the right tool and fills the arguments automatically.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
