About pudge-ui

pudge-ui is an MCP server that makes design-system component specifications available to coding agents. Its bundled specs can be queried through read-only tools.

Key features

  1. 01List components by category
  2. 02Search names, descriptions, or tags
  3. 03Retrieve foundation documentation
  4. 04Get one or multiple component specs
  5. 05Retrieve compositions and referenced specs

Use cases

  1. 01Look up component details while coding
  2. 02Filter the design-system catalog by category
  3. 03Retrieve a composition and its component specs

MCP support

The MCP server exposes tools for querying the component catalog, foundation docs, component specs, and compositions. Tools are read-only, and specs are bundled with the package.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"pudge-studio-pudge-ui": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@pudge-ui/mcp-server"
]
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @pudge-ui/mcp-server

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Details

From the project README

@pudge-ui/mcp-server

MCP server for the pudge-ui design system. Lets coding agents query component specs programmatically.

Installation

Add to your MCP client config (e.g. Claude Desktop, Claude Code):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pudge-ui": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pudge-ui/mcp-server"]
    }
  }
}

For local development:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pudge-ui": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["tsx", "src/index.ts"],
      "cwd": "/path/to/pudge-ui/packages/mcp-server"
    }
  }
}

Available Tools

ToolDescription
list_componentsList all components, optionally filtered by category
search_componentsFuzzy search components by name, description, or tags
get_foundationGet foundation spec docs (core 5 or extended 9)
get_componentGet full spec for a single component (foundation + spec)
get_componentsGet specs for multiple components (foundation included once)
get_compositionGet a composition spec with all referenced component specs

Examples

list_components({ category: "buttons" })
search_components({ query: "volume slider audio" })
get_component({ name: "push-button" })
get_components({ names: ["rotary-encoder", "vu-meter", "vertical-fader"] })
get_composition({ name: "audio-mixer-strip" })
get_foundation({ extended: true })

All tools are read-only (annotated with readOnlyHint) — the server never writes to your filesystem or makes network calls. Specs are bundled in the package.

Development

npm install
npm run dev # run with tsx
npm run build # compile + copy spec
npm run typecheck # type-check only
npm test # run the test suite

Versioning & stability

This server tracks pudge-ui's versioning and is pre-1.0. The component catalog grows between releases, but tool names and input shapes are stable — any change to a tool signature will come with a minor/major version bump and a CHANGELOG entry. Pin a version if you need byte-for-byte reproducibility.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
