About pure.md MCP server
The pure.md MCP server lets MCP clients fetch web pages as Markdown and run web searches. It targets local agents that fail to retrieve web content. An optional API key raises rate limits, and anonymous use is supported.
Key features
- 01unblock-url tool extracts Markdown from web pages
- 02search-web tool combines search results into Markdown
- 03Anonymous use or optional API key configuration
- 04Setup guides for Cursor, Windsurf and Claude Desktop
Use cases
- 01Fetching web content that local agents cannot access
- 02Giving an AI assistant web search results in Markdown
- 03Retrieving web reference material inside Cursor or Windsurf
MCP support
This is an MCP server that exposes the unblock-url and search-web tools to MCP clients. Clients launch it with npx puremd-mcp and read the PUREMD_API_KEY value from their configuration file.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEpure.md MCP server
Welcome to the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for pure.md.

pure.md lets your scripts, APIs, apps, agents, etc reliably access web content in markdown format -- simply prefix any URL with pure.md/.
It avoids bot detection and renders JavaScript for SPAs, and can convert HTML, PDFs, images, and more into pure markdown. Like a CDN for markdown content, it globally caches responses for future requests to the same resource, relieving stress on origin web servers.
Without puremd-mcp, local agents may fail to fetch web content. puremd-mcp teaches MCP clients like Cursor, Windsurf, and Claude Desktop how to adopt the functionality of pure.md, giving them web unblocking and searching capabilities.
puremd-mcp comes with two tools:
unblock-url- Extract markdown from web pages without getting blockedsearch-web- Search the web for a query and concatenate results into markdown
The Model Context Protocol, developed by Anthropic, is an open standard that enables AI systems to seamlessly interact with an ecosystem of tooling. With it, MCP clients like Cursor, Windsurf, and Claude Desktop can learn how to use a variety of APIs and other functionality.
Authentication
Generating an API key is an optional step that unlocks higher rate limits. If you'd like to use the pure.md MCP server anonymously, simply set your PUREMD_API_KEY value to empty string ("").
- Sign up for a new account at pure.md — it's free to sign up!
- In the dashboard, generate a new API token
- Copy the token, and use it for the
PUREMD_API_KEYvalue in your MCP client's configuration file (see below)

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
