Getting Started with Remote MCP Servers using Azure Functions (Overview)
LocalAbout Getting Started with Remote MCP Servers using Azure Functions (Overview)
This is the landing page for building remote MCP servers on Azure Functions, with links to quickstart templates for several language stacks. The servers are secured with keys and HTTPS, and can add EasyAuth, API Management or VNET isolation. It supports local debugging and deployment to Azure with azd up.
Key features
- 01Native Azure Functions experience using MCPTrigger
- 02Templates for Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, C# and Java
- 03Local debugging and one-command deployment with azd up
- 04Key and HTTPS based protection by default
- 05Optional EasyAuth, APIM and VNET isolation
Use cases
- 01Deploying a custom remote MCP server to Azure Functions
- 02Choosing a language-specific template repository
- 03Adding OAuth or network isolation to a remote MCP server
MCP support
The project provides templates for remote MCP servers. It uses the MCPTrigger to turn code in Azure Functions into MCP servers that remote MCP clients can call.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEGetting Started with Remote MCP Servers using Azure Functions (Overview)
This document contains quickstart templates and additional resources to easily build and deploy a custom remote MCP server to the cloud using Azure functions. You can clone/restore/run on your local machine with debugging, and azd up to have it in the cloud in a couple minutes. The MCP server is secured by design using keys and HTTPs, and allows more options for OAuth using EasyAuth and/or API Management as well as network isolation using VNET.
Use the MCP Extension for Azure Functions
You get a native Azure Functions experience turning code into MCP servers using the MCPTrigger.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
