Getting Started with Remote MCP Servers using Azure Functions (Node.js/TypeScript)
LocalAbout Getting Started with Remote MCP Servers using Azure Functions (Node.js/TypeScript)
A quickstart template for building and deploying remote MCP servers on Azure Functions. Developers can clone and debug locally, then deploy to the cloud with azd up. The README states the server is secured by design.
Key features
- 01Remote MCP server on Azure Functions
- 02Local run and debugging support
- 03Cloud deployment with azd up
- 04Built-in MCP authentication
- 05Samples for tools, prompts and MCP Apps
Use cases
- 01Quickly deploying a remote MCP server to Azure
- 02Learning the Azure Functions MCP extension
- 03Extending samples with custom tools or prompts
MCP support
The project is a template for MCP servers that exposes tools, prompts and MCP Apps resources with interactive UI to MCP clients.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
