Building a Remote MCP Server on Cloudflare (Without Auth)
LocalAbout Building a Remote MCP Server on Cloudflare (Without Auth)
This Cloudflare Workers example shows how to build and deploy a remote MCP server without authentication. It includes local development and connection instructions for Cloudflare AI Playground and Claude Desktop.
Key features
- 01Unauthenticated remote MCP server
- 02Cloudflare Workers deployment
- 03Local development setup
- 04Cloudflare AI Playground connection
- 05Claude Desktop connection
Use cases
- 01Prototype an unauthenticated MCP endpoint
- 02Run and test the server locally
- 03Connect a Worker server to an MCP client
MCP support
Demonstrates a remote MCP server on Cloudflare Workers and how MCP clients, including Cloudflare AI Playground and Claude Desktop, can connect to it.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEBuilding a Remote MCP Server on Cloudflare (Without Auth)
This example demonstrates how to create a remote MCP server on Cloudflare Workers that doesn't require authentication.
Setup and Installation
# Clone the repository
git clone [email protected]:cloudflare/ai.git
# Navigate to the project directory
cd ai/demos/remote-mcp-authless/
# Install dependencies
pnpm install
# Deploy your worker
pnpm run deploy
Your MCP server will be deployed to a URL like: remote-mcp-server-authless.your-account.workers.dev/sse
# Run locally
npm run dev
Your server will be available at http://localhost:8787/sse
Connect to Cloudflare AI Playground
You can connect to your MCP server from the Cloudflare AI Playground, which is a remote MCP client:
- Go to https://playground.ai.cloudflare.com/
- Enter your deployed MCP server URL (
worker-name.account-name.workers.dev/sse) - You can now use your MCP tools directly from the playground without any authentication!
Connect Claude Desktop to your MCP server
Follow Anthropic's Quickstart and within Claude Desktop go to Settings > Developer > Edit Config.
Update with this configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"calculator": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"mcp-remote",
"http://localhost:8787/sse" // or at remote-mcp-server-authless.your-account.workers.dev/sse
]
}
}
}
Restart Claude and you should see the tools available.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
