Details

From the project README

wwhois — MCP server

WHOIS/RDAP domain lookup, IP geolocation and Punycode conversion, exposed as Model Context Protocol tools. Backed by wwhois.ru.

  • Server URL: https://wwhois.ru/backend/mcp
  • Transport: Streamable HTTP (JSON-RPC 2.0)
  • Protocol revisions: 2026-07-28 (current — per-request metadata, server/discover) and 2025-11-25 … 2024-11-05 (the initialize handshake). Both are served on the same endpoint; the server picks by how the client opens.
  • Auth: none — public, read-only
  • Rate limit: 30 tool calls / minute per client IP
  • Docs: https://wwhois.ru/mcp

Connect

Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other clients with an MCP server config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "wwhois": { "type": "http", "url": "https://wwhois.ru/backend/mcp" }
  }
}

punycode_convertvalue (string)Converts a domain between Unicode (IDN) and Punycode/ACE (xn--), both directions, auto-detected.

Manual check

curl -s https://wwhois.ru/backend/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -H 'Accept: application/json' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}'

Notes

The server is a thin MCP wrapper over wwhois.ru's existing tools — the data is the same you get from the web pages at /whois, /ip and /punycode. It is a hosted remote service; this repository holds the description and manifests only.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
