About simple-mcp - MCP Project
simple-mcp is a Rust MCP project for developers experimenting with MCP. It includes a server with a greeting tool and a client that supports interactive and command-line use.
Key features
- 01MCP client and server components
- 02stdio transport with error handling
- 03Interactive tool selection and parameters
- 04One-shot command-line queries
- 05Detailed logging
Use cases
- 01Experimenting with an MCP client and server
- 02Greeting a person by name through the hello tool
- 03Running an interactive tool call
- 04Sending a one-shot command-line query
MCP support
The project includes an MCP server that exposes the `hello` tool to clients. Its client can connect to an existing server or start a server process over stdio.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
