About ZKshare
zkshare-mcp is a stdio MCP server for ZKshare that forwards tool calls to its context API. It is for MCP clients configured with a ZKshare API key; the package also includes metadata for discovery through the official MCP Registry preview.
Key features
- 01Forward calls to the context API
- 02Authenticate with a ZKshare API key
- 03Configure a custom API URL
- 04Run through npx
Use cases
- 01Connect an IDE to ZKshare
- 02Use ZKshare context tools from an MCP client
MCP support
Runs as a stdio MCP server and forwards tool calls to ZKshare's HTTPS /api/v1/context endpoint using the configured API key.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
npx -y zkshare-mcpZKSHARE_API_KEYSecretZKshare API key (zk_live_…). Create one at zkshare.io/api-key — required for POST /api/v1/context.ZKSHARE_API_URLAPI origin including scheme; omit for production (https://zkshare.io). Use http://localhost:3000 only when self-hosting.Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Published on npm. Stdio Model Context Protocol server for ZKshare — forwards tool calls to POST /api/v1/context with your API key.
Registry name: io.github.sp0oby/zkshare on the official Model Context Protocol Registry preview (verification field mcpName in package.json must stay identical to the name field in server.json).
MCP Registry (registry.modelcontextprotocol.io)
ZKshare participates in (or prepares for) discovery via the official MCP Registry preview. Metadata lives in server.json next to this package; the runnable artifact stays on npm.
Having zkshare-mcp on npm (e.g. v1.0.0) is only half the story: the registry **checks the tarball’s package.json for mcpName — that field was added in repo for v1.0.1. Until 1.0.1 is published to npm, mcp-publisher publish may fail verification. npx -y [email protected] continues to work unchanged for users already on npm.
One-time prerequisites
- npm account with publish rights to
zkshare-mcp. - GitHub account (
sp0oby) matching theio.github.sp0oby/…namespace when using GitHub device login. - Install the publisher CLI (quickstart).
Publish flow (maintainers)
- Align versions — bump
"version"inpackage.json,src/version.ts, and theversionfields inserver.jsontogether. - Build & publish npm — from this directory:
pnpm install && pnpm run buildnpm publish --access public(prepublishOnlyrunspnpm run build).
- Registry — install
mcp-publisher, then frompackages/zkshare-mcp/:mcp-publisher login github— device flow; GitHub user must match the namespace (sp0oby).mcp-publisher publish— uploadsserver.json(omit if you intentionally only ship npm).
Verify after publish
curl "https://registry.modelcontextprotocol.io/v0.1/servers?search=io.github.sp0oby/zkshare"
If mcp-publisher errors on validation, confirm description stays ≤100 characters (registry JSON schema).
Alternate namespaces
To use DNS or another auth method instead of io.github.sp0oby — change mcpName, server.json → name, and redo ownership verification — see registry docs on authentication and DNS in the same docs tree.
Use (no repo clone)
Needs Node.js ≥ 18.
npx -y zkshare-mcp
Your IDE normally runs this; set env in MCP settings.
Env
| Variable | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
ZKSHARE_API_KEY | Yes | From zkshare.io/api-key |
ZKSHARE_API_URL | No | Default https://zkshare.io. Use http://localhost:3000 only for a self-hosted API. |

On Windows, npx ships with Node (npx.cmd).

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
