About Spotify MCP
Spotify MCP is an MCP server for controlling Spotify playback through AI assistants. It provides song search, play, and pause functions for users who want to manage music through an assistant.
Key features
- 01Search Spotify for songs
- 02Play songs on the active device
- 03Pause current playback
Use cases
- 01Finding Spotify songs through an AI assistant
- 02Controlling playback and pause through an AI assistant
MCP support
The MCP server exposes tools for searching Spotify, playing songs, and pausing playback to AI assistants.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

python main.py
When you run the application for the first time, a browser window will open asking you to log in to your Spotify account and authorize the application.
How It Works
This project uses:
- MCP (Model Control Protocol): For creating AI-controlled tools
- Spotipy: Python client for the Spotify Web API
The MCP server exposes three functions that can be called by AI assistants:
search: Find songs on Spotifyplay: Play a specific songpause: Pause the currently playing song
Comments
New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
