About 🛰️ Steampipe MCP Server
Steampipe MCP Server is a prototype for developers, analysts, and non-technical users to query AWS resources in natural language. It converts questions into Steampipe SQL and returns structured results across resource, cost, and compliance data.
Key features
- 01Natural-language AWS queries
- 02Steampipe SQL generation
- 03EC2, S3, IAM, and CloudTrail insights
- 04AWS cost and usage queries
- 05Security and compliance checks
Use cases
- 01Check which EC2 instances are running
- 02Find publicly accessible S3 buckets
- 03Review AWS costs and IAM privileges
MCP support
It is an MCP server built with FastMCP that exposes natural-language AWS querying through Steampipe to MCP clients.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project README🛰️ Steampipe MCP Server
This project is a prototype MCP (Model Context Protocol) server designed to interface with Steampipe and AWS. It enables users to query AWS cloud resources using natural language — without needing to understand AWS-specific terminology or write raw SQL.
🚀 Purpose
The goal of this project is to bridge the gap between cloud complexity and human-friendly queries. By integrating Steampipe with MCP, this server allows developers, analysts, and even non-technical users to ask questions like:
- "How many EC2 instances are running?"
- "Which S3 buckets are publicly accessible?"
- "What was the highest AWS cost last month?"
- "Do any IAM users have administrator access?"
…and automatically receive structured responses pulled from your AWS environment.
✨ Features
- ✅ Natural Language Interface: Accepts plain English questions.
- 🔄 Dynamic SQL Generation: Translates input into Steampipe SQL queries.
- 🔍 AWS Resource Insight: Query EC2, S3, IAM, CloudTrail, and more.
- 💸 Cost & Usage Queries: Pull cost data via Steampipe's AWS billing tables.
- 📊 Compliance Visibility: Evaluate configurations for security and compliance.
- 📦 MCP Protocol Support: Built using FastMCP, ready to plug into AI tools like Claude.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
