About Smart Reader MCP

Smart Reader MCP, formerly Prism, is a retired local media router that sniffed formats and launched Citra, Iris, or Cue MCP servers. Its README says not to install it as a current product; media selection and composition belong in host skills.

Key features

  1. 01Retired product; not for new installations
  2. 02Historically routed media to Citra, Iris, or Cue
  3. 03Included reference code for magic-byte sniffing

Use cases

  1. 01Consult historical implementation details
  2. 02Reuse the sniffing reference when building a host skill

MCP support

Historically, it acted as a router that spawned Citra, Iris, and Cue MCP servers; the README marks this product as retired and advises against installing it.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"sylphxai-smart-reader": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@sylphx/smart-reader-mcp"
]
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @sylphx/smart-reader-mcp

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Details

From the project README

RETIRED — Prism / smart-reader-mcp

Status: retired product (hard cut, 2026-08-07)

Prism was a local media router (sniff + spawn Citra/Iris/Cue MCP servers). That composition belongs to the agent host / skills, not a seventh product.

Do not install as a product

  • Do not add smart-reader-mcp / prism as a current MCP server for new agents.
  • Do not treat this repository as an active Instrument, marketplace listing, or release authority.
  • Historical source remains for archaeology only.

What to use instead

NeedAuthority
PDF evidenceCitra — @sylphx/citra / SylphxAI/citra
Image evidenceIris — @sylphx/iris / SylphxAI/iris
Video timelineCue — @sylphx/cue / SylphxAI/cue
Unknown media typeHost skill: sniff (magic bytes / extension) then call the matching instrument MCP
Family lawSylphxAI/skills → apply-instrument-family + docs/knowledge/instruments/INSTRUMENT-FAMILY-LAW.md

Why retired

  1. Multi-server MCP hosts already compose independent servers.
  2. A router product doubles process tax and couples three release trains.
  3. Instruments law: host owns composition; products own one evidence domain.

Historical package ids (non-authority)

  • @sylphx/smart-reader-mcp
  • bin prism / smart-reader-mcp
  • MCP name io.github.SylphxAI/smart-reader-mcp

If these still resolve on npm, they are legacy artifacts, not the current product model.

Sniff utility (non-product)

Magic-byte sniffing for host skills lives under src/sniff/ as reference code. Prefer copying a minimal sniff into a host skill rather than depending on this package.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
