About Terranode Geospatial API

Terranode Geospatial API is an MCP server that gives AI agents tools for querying geospatial datasets. It supports point-in-polygon checks, nearest-feature search, distance calculations, and spatial joins, using a Terranode API key.

Key features

  1. 01List available datasets
  2. 02Point-in-polygon lookup
  3. 03Nearest-feature search with distances
  4. 04Geodesic distance calculation
  5. 05Spatial joins for multiple coordinates

Use cases

  1. 01Finding the area containing a coordinate
  2. 02Locating nearby dataset features
  3. 03Calculating distances between points
  4. 04Adding polygon attributes to coordinate lists

MCP support

The server exposes five geospatial query tools to MCP clients: list_datasets, check_location, find_nearest, calculate_distance, and spatial_join. Access requires a Terranode API key.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"terranode-co-mcp-server-terranode": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@terranode-co/mcp-server"
],
"env": {
"TERRANODE_API_KEY": "<TERRANODE_API_KEY>",
"TERRANODE_API_URL": "<TERRANODE_API_URL>"
}
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @terranode-co/mcp-server
Environment variables to set
TERRANODE_API_KEYSecretAPI key from app.terranode.co
TERRANODE_API_URLAPI base URL (defaults to https://api.terranode.co)

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Details

From the project README

@terranode-co/mcp-server

MCP server for spatial queries via the Terranode Geospatial API. Gives AI agents (Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.) tools to query geospatial datasets — point-in-polygon lookups, nearest feature search, distance calculations, and spatial joins.

Prerequisites

Setup

Claude Desktop

Add to your claude_desktop_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "terranode": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@terranode-co/mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "TERRANODE_API_KEY": "your-api-key-here"
      }
    }
  }
}
Cursor

Add to your Cursor MCP settings (.cursor/mcp.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "terranode": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@terranode-co/mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "TERRANODE_API_KEY": "your-api-key-here"
      }
    }
  }
}
Claude Code

Add to your Claude Code MCP settings:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "terranode": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@terranode-co/mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "TERRANODE_API_KEY": "your-api-key-here"
      }
    }
  }
}

Available tools

ToolDescription
list_datasetsList all available geospatial datasets (system + custom)
check_locationPoint-in-polygon: which feature contains a coordinate?
find_nearestFind the N nearest features to a coordinate, with distances
calculate_distanceGeodesic distance between two points (meters + miles)
spatial_joinEnrich multiple coordinates with polygon attributes at once

Example prompts

Try these in Claude Desktop or Cursor:

  • "What county is latitude 40.71, longitude -74.00 in?"
  • "What datasets are available?"
  • "Find the 3 nearest counties to Central Park"
  • "How close is my proposed site (40.7128, -74.006) to the nearest school (34.0522, -118.2437)?"
  • "Which states do these 5 warehouse locations fall in?" (paste coordinates)
  • "What ZIP code is 37.7749, -122.4194 in?"

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
