Key features
- 01Set monthly category caps
- 02Record spending by category
- 03View caps, spending, and remaining amounts
- 04Identify over-budget categories
- 05Keep ledger data local

- 02Compare transport spending with its monthly limit
- 03Review categories that have exceeded their caps
MCP support
Exposes `budget_set`, `budget_spend`, and `budget_report` tools to MCP clients for managing and reviewing a local budget ledger.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEMCP Budget — monthly budgets you set and check inside the conversation
Give Claude (or any MCP client) a real envelope budget: budget_set to declare a category and its monthly cap, budget_spend to record spending against it, budget_report to see every category with how much is left. All of it in chat, all of it on your machine, no finance app login and no bank connection.
Why a budget server
Budget apps want your bank credentials, a subscription, and the discipline to open them. This one asks for none of that. It keeps a simple in-memory ledger for the session: you say "groceries 400" and "spend 62 on groceries", and the report tells you what remains. It is the fastest possible loop between "can I afford this?" and an answer.
What it does
budget_set— set a monthly cap for a category (groceries, transport, eating out — any name you use).budget_spend— record an amount against a category; the server rejects nothing and judges nothing, it just does the arithmetic.budget_report— one table: category, cap, spent, remaining. Over-budget categories are visible at a glance.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
