About TiDB MCP Server
TiDB MCP Server lets MCP clients run SELECT queries against a TiDB database. It reads connection settings from environment variables and includes an optional setting for permitting INSERT operations.
Key features
- 01Run SELECT queries on TiDB
- 02Configure connections with environment variables
- 03Optionally enable INSERT operations
Use cases
- 01Query TiDB tables through MCP
- 02Allow INSERT operations when needed
MCP support
It exposes a TiDB query tool to MCP clients for SELECT queries. INSERT operations can be enabled through an environment variable.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMETiDB MCP Server
A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for TiDB that allows executing SELECT queries through MCP tools.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
