About tmux-mcp-tools
A retired, unmaintained MCP server that historically provided tools for creating and operating panes in tmux sessions. Its documentation is retained for reference, and it recommends using tmux through an agent's shell tool instead.
Key features
- 01Create dedicated tmux panes
- 02Read pane output and scrollback
- 03Send keystrokes or run commands
- 04Write files using heredocs
Use cases
- 01Refer to the historical MCP tool interface
- 02Use the shell tool to operate tmux as documented
MCP support
The historical MCP server exposed tools to create and inspect tmux panes, send keystrokes, run commands, and write files. The project is retired and no longer maintained.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Retired
This project was retired on 2026-10-02 and is no longer maintained. Use tmux directly through your agent's shell tool. The source is retained for reference, and automated PyPI publishing has been removed.
For long-running or interactive work, create a dedicated tmux window, keep its
pane ID, and use send-keys and capture-pane to interact with it:
tmux new-window -d -n agent-task -P -F '#{pane_id}'
# Replace %12 with the pane ID returned above.
tmux send-keys -t %12 -l 'python -m http.server 8000'
tmux send-keys -t %12 Enter
tmux capture-pane -p -t %12 -S -100
tmux send-keys -t %12 C-c
The documentation below describes the historical MCP interface.
MCP server providing tools for interacting with tmux sessions.

- tmux_create_pane: Must create a dedicated pane before running background servers, REPLs, remote shells, or other long-running tasks
- tmux_capture_pane: Read pane contents with optional delay and scroll-back
- tmux_send_keys: Send raw keystrokes (no auto-Enter) for interactive programs
- tmux_send_command: Execute commands with auto-Enter, optional wait pattern
- tmux_write_file: Write files via heredoc (for remote/SSH environments)

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
