About layerback-mcp
layerback-mcp lets MCP-compatible agents turn diagram images into editable Visio, PowerPoint, draw.io, and SVG files. It reconstructs shapes, connectors, and labels as native objects, with tools to start conversions, check status, and download results.
Key features
- 01Convert local diagram images
- 02Export editable VSDX, PPTX, draw.io, SVG
- 03Check conversion job status
- 04Download converted files locally
Use cases
- 01Rebuild a whiteboard photo as an editable diagram
- 02Convert an architecture screenshot to draw.io
- 03Batch-convert PNG diagrams to VSDX
MCP support
The MCP server exposes tools to convert local diagram images, poll conversion jobs, and save converted files. It connects MCP-compatible agents to LayerBack for conversion.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
npx -y layerback-mcpLAYERBACK_API_KEYSecretLayerBack API key from https://layerback.com/settings/apikeysLocal servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

From the project READMELayerBack MCP Server
Give your AI agent the one diagram skill it's missing: turning pictures of diagrams into fully editable files.
Agents can write Mermaid — but when the input is a screenshot, a whiteboard photo, or a diagram trapped in a PDF page, they're stuck. This MCP server connects any MCP-compatible agent (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, …) to LayerBack, which rebuilds every shape, connector, and label as a native object and returns Visio (VSDX), PowerPoint (PPTX), draw.io, and SVG — all editable, from one conversion.
Tools
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
convert_diagram_image | Convert a local image file (PNG/JPG/WebP); waits for the result by default (~30–60 s) |
get_conversion_status | Poll a running job |
download_converted_diagram | Save any output format to a local path |
Setup
- Create an API key at https://layerback.com/settings/apikeys (new accounts include free credits — one conversion costs 10 and includes every output format).
- Add the server to your MCP client config:
{
"mcpServers": {
"layerback": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "layerback-mcp"],
"env": { "LAYERBACK_API_KEY": "your-key-here" }
}
}
}
Example prompts
- "Convert ~/Desktop/whiteboard.jpg into a Visio file and save it to my Downloads folder."
- "Here's a screenshot of our architecture diagram — rebuild it as an editable draw.io file."
- "Batch-convert every PNG in ./legacy-diagrams to VSDX."
Notes
- Requires Node 18+.
- REST API docs: https://layerback.com/docs/api · OpenAPI: https://layerback.com/openapi.yaml
- Files upload to LayerBack for conversion and are deleted within 72 hours.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
