About Track Your Time

Track Your Time MCP server lets users manage timers, time entries, catalog items, and hour summaries through an MCP client. It works with the hosted service or a self-hosted instance, with available tools determined by the API token's scopes.

Key features

  1. 01Start and stop timers
  2. 02Record and list time entries
  3. 03Manage clients, projects, tasks, and tags
  4. 04Generate summary reports
  5. 05Limit tools by token scopes

Use cases

  1. 01Start a timer from an MCP client
  2. 02Log hours that were missed
  3. 03Review time entries for a workspace
  4. 04Summarize tracked hours

MCP support

The MCP server exposes time tracking, catalog, and reporting tools to MCP clients according to token scopes. It uses stdio and calls the hosted or self-hosted service's REST API.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"trebeljahr-trackyourtime": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"trackyourtime-mcp"
],
"env": {
"TRACKYOURTIME_API_TOKEN": "<TRACKYOURTIME_API_TOKEN>",
"TRACKYOURTIME_API_URL": "<TRACKYOURTIME_API_URL>"
}
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y trackyourtime-mcp
Environment variables to set
TRACKYOURTIME_API_TOKENSecretA workspace API token created in Settings → Integrations.
TRACKYOURTIME_API_URLAPI origin. Defaults to https://api.trackyourtime.dev; use your own instance's origin for self-hosting.

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Details

From the project README

Track Your Time MCP server

Start a timer, record missed hours, or ask for a report from your MCP client. Use the hosted Track Your Time service or your own server.

Requires Node.js 24 or newer and a Track Your Time API token.

Connect

Create a token in Settings → Integrations → API tokens. Select only the scopes you need. The token belongs to one workspace.

Add this entry to your MCP client's configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "trackyourtime": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "trackyourtime-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "TRACKYOURTIME_API_TOKEN": "tt_your_token"
      }
    }
  }
}

For self-hosting, also set TRACKYOURTIME_API_URL to your instance's origin, such as https://time.example.com.

Treat the API token like a password. MCP client configuration files usually store it in plain text. Revoke the token in Track Your Time when you stop using it.

Available tools

The server reads your token's scopes and offers the tools those scopes permit:

ScopeTools
Noneget_token_info
entries:readget_running_timer, list_entries
entries:writestart_timer, stop_timer, log_time_entry
catalog:readlist_clients, list_projects, list_tasks, list_tags
catalog:writecreate_client, create_project, create_task, create_tag
reports:readsummary_report

There are no invoice tools or hosted MCP endpoint. This package uses stdio and calls your server's REST API.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
