About Variflight MCP Server

Variflight MCP Server is a stdio MCP server implementation for VariFlight flight information services. It provides tools for flight search, connections, airport weather, comfort metrics and live aircraft location. It suits applications and users who need aviation data.

Key features

  1. 01Search flights by route or flight number
  2. 02Look up connecting flight options
  3. 03Three-day airport weather forecast
  4. 04Real-time aircraft location by tail number
  5. 05Flight price and itinerary search

Use cases

  1. 01Finding direct flights on a given date
  2. 02Comparing connecting routes and cabin prices
  3. 03Checking the three-day forecast for an airport

MCP support

The project is an MCP server that exposes flight, weather and price tools to MCP clients. A remote version is also available over streamable HTTP.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"variflight": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@variflight-ai/variflight-mcp"
],
"env": {
"VARIFLIGHT_API_KEY": "<VARIFLIGHT_API_KEY>"
}
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @variflight-ai/variflight-mcp

VARIFLIGHT_API_KEYSecretYour API key for the service

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

From the project README

Variflight MCP Server

A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server implementation for VariFlight flight information services. This server provides various tools to query flight information, weather data, and flight comfort metrics.

This package is the stdio distribution of VariFlight Aviation MCP on the VariFlight AI Open Platform. Full documentation, including client setup, tool reference and pricing: ai.variflight.com/docs/aviation (中文).

Variflight API Key

To use the Variflight MCP server, you need to have a Variflight API key. Sign up at ai.variflight.com and create one in the console; new accounts receive ¥50 in trial credits.

Remote server

The same tools are available as a remote MCP server over streamable HTTP, with no local process required:

claude mcp add --transport http variflight-aviation https://ai.variflight.com/servers/aviation/mcp \
  --header "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"

Clients that support OAuth 2.1 can add https://ai.variflight.com/servers/aviation/mcp without a key and sign in when prompted.

Installation

    "mcpServers": {
        "variflight": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@variflight-ai/variflight-mcp"
            ],
            "env": {

            }
        }
    }
}

Available Tools

1. Search Flights by Departure and Arrival

Search direct flights by city or airport code on a specific date. Use city codes like BJS or exact airport codes like PEK, but do not mix city and airport codes for the same side:

searchFlightsByDepArr({
  dep: "PEK",  // Beijing
  arr: "SHA",  // Shanghai
  date: "2024-03-20"
})
2. Search Flights by Number

Search a specific flight by flight number and date:

searchFlightsByNumber({
  fnum: "MU2157",
  date: "2024-03-20"
})
3. Get Flight Transfer Information

Search connecting flight options between departure and arrival cities:

getFlightTransferInfo({
  depcity: "BJS",
  arrcity: "LAX",
  depdate: "2024-03-20"
})

searchFlightsByDepArr and getFlightTransferInfo also accept optional paging parameters. Busy routes can return dozens of results with many fields each, so use these to keep responses small:

  • limit: maximum number of results to return
  • offset: number of results to skip; pass next_offset from the previous response to get the next page. Each page is a separate billed call.
  • detail: "summary" returns only the core fields of each result; "full" (the default) returns every field

When any of them is set, the response also includes total, offset, returned and, if more results exist, next_offset. Without them, the response is unchanged.

searchFlightsByDepArr({
  depcity: "BJS",
  arrcity: "SHA",
  date: "2024-03-20",
  limit: 20,
  detail: "summary"
})
4. Flight Happiness Index

Get comfort-focused details for a known flight, such as punctuality, aircraft type, cabin configuration, meals, and entertainment:

flightHappinessIndex({
  fnum: "MU2157",
  date: "2024-03-20"
})
5. Real-time Aircraft Location

Track realtime flight location using the aircraft registration number, also called tail number:

getRealtimeLocationByAnum({
  anum: "B2021"
})
6. Airport Weather Forecast

Get the 3-day airport weather forecast:

getFutureWeatherByAirport({
  airport: "PEK"
})
7. Search Flight Itineraries

Get a natural-language summary with recommended flight options, overall lowest price, shortest duration, and several suggested itineraries:

searchFlightItineraries({
  depCityCode: "BJS",  // Beijing
  arrCityCode: "SHA",  // Shanghai
  depDate: "2025-04-20"
})
8. Get Flight Prices by Cities

Get structured raw sale-flight data between two cities, with each flight returning cabin-level prices:

getFlightPriceByCities({
  dep_city: "BJS",  // Beijing
  arr_city: "SHA",  // Shanghai
  dep_date: "2026-04-20"
})

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
