About OpenAPI MCP Server
An MCP server that turns operations in an OpenAPI YAML specification into tools and makes the corresponding API calls. It is intended for Claude users who want to work with APIs through generated tools.
Key features
- 01Parses OpenAPI YAML files
- 02Creates a tool for each API operation
- 03Supports path and query parameters and request bodies
- 04Makes API calls and returns responses
- 05Claude Desktop integration
Use cases
- 01Use API operations as Claude tools
- 02Query an API described by an OpenAPI YAML file
MCP support
The server exposes OpenAPI operations as MCP tools, then makes the corresponding API request when Claude invokes one.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEOpenAPI MCP Server
This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that reads an OpenAPI specification file and exposes each API operation as a tool for Claude AI to use.
Features
- Automatically parses OpenAPI YAML files
- Generates MCP tools for each API operation
- Handles path parameters, query parameters, and request bodies
- Makes live API calls when Claude uses the tools
- Easy integration with Claude Desktop
Installation
# Clone the repository
git clone https://github.com/yourusername/openapi-mcp-server.git
cd openapi-mcp-server
# Install dependencies
npm install
Usage
-
Place your OpenAPI YAML file in the project directory or provide a path to it via environment variables.
-
Set up environment variables (optional):
# Create a .env file
echo "DEBUG=true" > .env
echo "OPENAPI_FILE=./path/to/your/openapi.yaml" >> .env
- Initialize the server with Claude Desktop:
npm run init
- Or run the server manually:
npm start
Configuration
You can configure the server using environment variables:
DEBUG: Set totrueto enable debug logging (default:false)OPENAPI_FILE: Path to your OpenAPI YAML file (default:./openapi.yaml)
How it Works
The server reads your OpenAPI specification file and:
- Extracts all paths and operations
- Creates a tool for each operation with appropriate input schemas
- When Claude calls a tool, the server makes the corresponding API request
- The response is returned to Claude for analysis
Example
With an OpenAPI spec like:
paths:
/users:
get:
operationId: listUsers
summary: List all users
...
Claude can call the listUsers tool, and the server will make a GET request to /users on your behalf.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
