About ShareBox
ShareBox is a self-hosted platform and CLI for publishing small web tools built by AI agents and sharing them with selected people, a Google Workspace domain, or anyone with a link. Its MCP interface includes publishing and sharing tools, plus a guide resource and a build prompt.
Key features
- 01Initialize a starter project using the SDK
- 02Publish or update web tools
- 03List tools and inspect their details
- 04Share tools and remove shares
- 05Roll back to a previous version
- 06Manage external-service secrets
Use cases
- 01Publish an agent-built web tool to a ShareBox instance
- 02Update a published tool while retaining its address and data
- 03Share a tool with an individual, domain, or link audience
- 04Revert a tool to its previous version
MCP support
Runs as an MCP server over stdio and exposes tools for creating, publishing, listing, sharing, and rolling back tools. It also provides a guide as an MCP resource and a `build_tool` prompt.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
npx -y sharebox-cliSHAREBOX_URLAddress of your ShareBox instance, e.g. https://sharebox.example.com (not needed after `sharebox login`)SHAREBOX_TOKENSecretAPI token for that instance (not needed after `sharebox login`)Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Details
From the project READMEsharebox-cli
Command line and MCP server for ShareBox, a self-hosted platform where AI agents publish small web tools and you share them like a Google Doc: with specific people, a whole Google Workspace domain, or anyone with the link. Visitors sign in with Google; every tool gets a trusted identity, its own storage and its own sandbox.
You need a running ShareBox instance (yours or your organization's). To set one up, see the install guide.
Install
npm install -g sharebox-cli
Requires Node 20 or newer. Every ShareBox instance also serves its own copy at https://<instance>/cli/sharebox.tgz.
Connect
sharebox login sharebox.example.com
A browser opens: sign in with Google and click Authorize. The token is stored in ~/.sharebox/credentials.json. On servers or in CI you can set SHAREBOX_URL and SHAREBOX_TOKEN instead.
Use it from an agent (MCP)
Claude Code:
claude mcp add --scope user sharebox -- sharebox mcp
On Windows: claude mcp add --scope user sharebox -- cmd /c sharebox mcp.
Without a global install, other MCP clients can run npx -y sharebox-cli mcp (after npx sharebox-cli login <instance> once).
Tools: sharebox_guide, sharebox_create_project, sharebox_publish, sharebox_list, sharebox_info, sharebox_share, sharebox_rollback, sharebox_unshare. There is deliberately no delete tool: deleting erases data, so it stays in the CLI behind a confirmation.
The guide is also an MCP resource (sharebox://guide), and the build_tool prompt (arguments idea and optional share_with) asks the agent to build, publish and optionally share a tool with the guide attached. In Claude Code it shows up as /mcp__sharebox__build_tool.
Then just ask: "Build a vacation tracker for my team and publish it on ShareBox."
Commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
sharebox init <folder> [--name N] | Starter folder with an example that uses the SDK |
sharebox publish [folder] [--name N] [--tool T] | Publish, or update the same tool on later runs (same address, data kept). --tool updates an existing tool from any folder, e.g. after an agent rebuilt it elsewhere |
sharebox list | Tools you can manage |
sharebox info <tool> | Address, version and shares |
sharebox share <tool> <with> [--role use|manage] | <with>: an email, @domain.com or anyone |
sharebox unshare <tool> <with> | Remove a share |
sharebox secret set <tool> <NAME> --host <domain> | Secret for an external service, typed without echo (or piped on stdin); the tool uses {{secret:NAME}} in requests to that domain |
sharebox secret list <tool> · sharebox secret remove <tool> <NAME> | Secret names and domains (never values) · remove one |
sharebox rollback <tool> | Go back to the previous version (published again as a new version, same link and data); run it again to undo |
sharebox delete <tool> --yes | Delete a tool and its data |
sharebox guide | How to build a tool (written for agents) |
sharebox mcp | MCP server on stdio |

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
