About card-sort-analysis
A UX research skill for analyzing card-sorting results and turning them into information architecture recommendations. It examines grouping patterns, identifies ambiguous items, and suggests navigation structures and follow-up research.
Key features
- 01Clarifying study method and card set
- 02Finding category and naming patterns
- 03Building an item similarity matrix
- 04Recommending navigation categories
- 05Flagging inconsistently grouped cards
- 06Suggesting research next steps
Use cases
- 01Analyzing open or closed card sorts
- 02Planning navigation from participant groupings

Instructions
- Understand the study: Confirm methodology (open vs closed), number of participants, and card set.
- Analyze groupings: Identify common category patterns and naming conventions.
- Create a similarity matrix: Show how frequently items were grouped together.
- Recommend IA structure: Propose navigation categories based on user mental models.
- Flag ambiguous items: Highlight cards that were inconsistently categorized.
- Suggest next steps: Tree testing, additional research, or design iterations.
- Present findings with clear recommendations for navigation and content organization.
