About google-aip
google-aip is a skill for designing or reviewing Protocol Buffers APIs. It guides developers to find and apply bundled Google AIP documents, distinguishing requirements, recommendations, and intentional deviations in the result.
Key features
- 01Search the AIP catalog by concept
- 02Read matching full AIP documents
- 03Account for AIP status and normative guidance
- 04Consult AIP-0200 when precedent conflicts
- 05Cite AIP numbers in results
Use cases
- 01Design a Protocol Buffers API
- 02Review existing API definitions
- 03Explain API change requirements and recommendations

From the project READMEApply the bundled Google AIPs when designing or reviewing protobuf APIs.
Workflow
- Inspect the request and the relevant API definitions.
- Search
references/catalog.mdfor the concepts involved. Usergor another text search instead of loading the entire catalog when possible. - Read only the matching documents from
references/aips/{NUMBER}.md, using four-digit numbers such as0132.md. - Apply the full AIP text, not the catalog preview. Account for each AIP's state and distinguish normative guidance from examples.
- When established API precedent conflicts with newer guidance, read AIP-0200 before recommending a deviation.
- Cite AIP numbers in the result and separate required changes, recommendations, and intentional deviations.
