hypothesis-and-ablation-planner
About hypothesis-and-ablation-planner
A planning skill for researchers designing ablation studies around empirical claims. It links each experiment to a causal hypothesis, controls competing explanations, and prioritizes a compact set of informative tests.
Key features
- 01Decompose methods into causal components
- 02Define hypothesis-linked ablations
- 03Control confounds and competing explanations
- 04Prioritize must-have, useful, and optional tests
- 05Summarize results in a structured table
Use cases
- 01Plan ablations for a research paper
- 02Separate competing explanations for an effect
- 03Reduce redundant experiments
- 04Identify remaining confounds and decisive tests

From the project READMEHypothesis and Ablation Planner
Ablations should test explanations, not merely remove components.
Procedure
- State the main empirical claim.
- Decompose the method into causal components.
- For each component, define:
- claimed mechanism
- minimal ablation
- expected directional effect
- competing explanation
- Add controls for:
- parameter count
- compute budget
- data leakage/filtering
- prompt/template effects
- preprocessing artifacts
- implementation bias
- Minimize the ablation set:
- remove redundant studies
- prioritize hypothesis-separating experiments
- Label each ablation:
- must-have
- useful
- optional
Rules
- Every ablation must answer a specific causal question.
- Avoid ablation explosion.
- If two explanations remain confounded, state it explicitly.
- Prefer interpretable ablations over cosmetic variants.
- “Removing one block” is not sufficient unless tied to a hypothesis.
- Keep training budget and evaluation protocol controlled whenever possible.
Output Format
| Hypothesis | Component | Ablation | Expected Result | Alternative Explanation Controlled | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ... | ... | ... | ... | ... | Must-have / Useful / Optional |
Final Checks
After the table, briefly state:
- which hypotheses are still confounded
- which ablation is most decisive
- which ablation is cheapest per unit insight
