About page-reduce
page-reduce is a skill for analyzing webpage structure: it detects and tokenizes content in a browser, then reduces it to a structural skeleton. It is intended for page migration, blueprint extraction, and block-generation analysis, and can produce an HTML skeleton and structured manifest.
Key features
- 01Detect and tokenize webpage content
- 02Identify sections and layouts
- 03Collapse repeated structures into patterns
- 04Produce an HTML skeleton and metadata manifest
- 05Run Phase 1 only when needed
Use cases
- 01Migrate pages to AEM Edge Delivery Services
- 02Extract a page blueprint
- 03Analyze structures for block generation

From the project READMEpage-reduce
Reduce any webpage to a minimal structural skeleton: browser-based content
tokenization (Phase 1, web page reduce) followed by structural reasoning
(Phase 2, you).
Requirements
Node 22+ and playwright-cli >= 0.1.20 on PATH (playwright-cli --version).
Locate the web CLI once:
# <skill-dir> is the directory containing this SKILL.md
WEB=$(command -v web || echo "node <skill-dir>/../../cli/dist/web.mjs")
then run $WEB …; it prints exactly one JSON document on stdout,
so $WEB … > file.json is safe.
Fallback when published: npx -y @adobe/web-cli. Use an absolute <skill-dir>; don't cd into it.
Sessions. If WEB_SESSION or PLAYWRIGHT_CLI_SESSION is set, do not pass
--session: every web command uses that browser and leaves it open. Otherwise
either run one-shot ($WEB page tree "$URL" opens and closes its own browser) or
start a browser and reuse the generated name:
S=$($WEB browser open "$URL" | jq -r .session) then --session "$S".
Never invent a fixed session name.
When to Use
Migrating a page to AEM Edge Delivery Services, extracting a page blueprint, or analyzing page structure for block generation.
Input: /page-reduce <URL>. Optional flags from the user:
--phase1-only: stop after Phase 1, output the raw tokenized JSON--output <dir>: write files to a specific directory (default: cwd)
Phase 1: detect and tokenize
$WEB page reduce "$URL" [--settle-ms 2000] [--retries 2] > phase1-output.json
For a page with overlays, use one session so they are gone before detection:
S=$($WEB browser open "$URL" | jq -r .session)
$WEB page overlays --session "$S" --dismiss
$WEB page reduce --session "$S" > phase1-output.json
$WEB browser close --session "$S"
The CLI scrolls for lazy content, unpins fixed/sticky elements, detects sections, cleans the DOM (scripts, invisible elements, styling tags, comments, tracking attributes) and replaces content with tokens.
Output: { url, title, viewport, templateHash, sections: [...], session, durationMs }
where each section is:
{ "index": 0, "sectionType": "hero", "xpath": "...", "tokenizedHtml": "...",
"layout": { "numCols": 2, "numRows": 1 }, "features": ["hasHeading", "hasCTA"] }
Exit 1 (EMPTY_RESULT): no sections after --retries rescrolls. Report that to
the user instead of writing empty output files; try --retries 4 --settle-ms 4000
or --headed once. Exit 3: blocked, run browser-probe and pass --recipe.
If --phase1-only was requested, stop here.
Phase 2: structural reasoning
Read the Phase 2 rules and apply them to each
section's tokenizedHtml. They collapse repeated patterns into {REPEAT:N},
remove decorative wrappers and utility/tracking attributes, collapse complex
forms and navs, strip overlay panels, and re-type sections.
Output files
skeleton.html: all sections with comment separators, pretty-printed with 2-space indentation:
<!-- section:0 type:hero xpath:/html/body/main/section[1] -->
<section class="hero">
<h1>{HEADING:1}</h1>
<p>{TEXT}</p>
{CTA:Get Started}
{IMAGE:1200x600}
</section>
<!-- section:1 type:cards xpath:/html/body/main/div[2] -->
<div class="cards-container">
<div class="card">
{IMAGE:400x300}
<h3>{HEADING:3}</h3>
<p>{TEXT}</p>
<a>{LINK:Read more}</a>
</div>
{REPEAT:4}
</div>
manifest.json: structured metadata per section; schema in the Phase 2 rules. Write both files to the output directory.
Report
- Number of sections detected, and their types (note any re-typings)
- Size stats: original HTML, Phase 1, Phase 2 skeleton
(original:
$WEB browser eval "document.documentElement.outerHTML.length" --session "$S") - Paths to the output files
Chaining
page-prepequivalent:$WEB page overlays --dismissbefore Phase 1 (above).- Blocked pages:
browser-probe, then--recipe.
Escape hatch
playwright-cli -s <session> … drives the same browser.
