About principle-redesign-from-first-principles

A design skill for integrating requirements by reconsidering the affected design from first principles rather than attaching a local change. It is intended for people evolving existing designs and emphasizes carrying the redesign through all references.

Key features

  1. 01Review affected files and current design
  2. 02Reconsider the design from scratch
  3. 03Propagate changes across references
  4. 04Deliver the redesign incrementally

Use cases

  1. 01Integrating a foundational new requirement
  2. 02Updating types, docs, examples, and rationale together

Redesign From First Principles

When integrating a change, don't bolt it onto the existing design. Redesign as if the requirement had been a foundational assumption from the start.

  • Read all affected files and understand the current design
  • Ask: "if we were writing this from scratch with this new requirement, what would we build?"
  • Propagate the change through every reference: types, docs, examples, rationale sections
  • Think about the whole redesign, then deliver it incrementally

This is the method for preserving option value when integrating changes into an existing design.
