About slice

slice is a roadmap skill for deepening one named area of an existing design. It reuses parent decisions, updates the design section, and stops before generating tasks.

Key features

  1. 01Focus on one named area
  2. 02Inspect relevant repository context first
  3. 03Reuse parent roadmap decisions
  4. 04Revise and review the design section
  5. 05Stop before task generation

Use cases

  1. 01Deepen an area in an existing roadmap
  2. 02Extend a slice while preserving an existing design
  3. 03Refine a scoped design after repository recon

Install

Copy the command and run it in a terminal.

$npx skills add https://github.com/patrickruddiman/skills --skill slice

After installing, type/slicein Claude Code to confirm it loaded.

Slice

Use roadmap to deepen one area inside the canonical design. A slice is a scoped design view, not a separate planning process.

Workflow

  1. Load ../roadmap/SKILL.md and ../roadmap/references/roadmap-schema.md.
  2. Read the parent roadmap or legacy design and the named area.
  3. Run repository recon for that area before asking anything.
  4. Reuse settled parent decisions. Ask only a newly discovered blocking question; do not restart the interview or exceed Roadmap's five-question planning-round cap.
  5. Add or revise a subsection under ## 6. Design.
  6. Re-run the ponytail and rubber-duck checks for affected decisions.
  7. Stop before task generation.

Compatibility

  • If the user provides an existing slice file, maintain it and link it from the roadmap rather than forcing a migration.
  • For new work, do not create separate slice files by default.
  • Preserve unrelated design sections and all consumed-task history.

Rules

  • One named area per invocation.
  • Smallest end-to-end version that satisfies the parent outcome wins.
  • Name concrete paths, symbols, inputs, outputs, and reused patterns.
  • Do not invent categories that the area does not need.
  • No code, task lists, speculative extension points, or repeated product discovery.
